Highlights of Worship Committee Meeting on June 9, 2004

The full minutes are available in a Microsoft Word file ( DOC) and in an Adobe Portable Document Format file ( PDF). In both documents, the table of contents entries are hyperlinks to the corresponding topics. In addition, you may use “bookmarks” in the Acrobat reader to reach the same material. Happy reading!

LOGISTICS
When a logistics coordinator forgets to show up for a service, it can be disruptive. (Ever tried to collect the offering without any baskets?) Perhpas the logistics function is critical enough that it should be the responsibility of Worship Committee members. At the July meeting, the Worship Committee will reconsider our process for dealing with the logistics coorinator function.

JULY 4th SERVICE
There has been a change of speaker for this service. Alex Koerger will speak, based Jaco ten Hove's sermon "Do Youth Have Souls?"

EVALUATION OF OUTSIDE SPEAKERS
Should we attempt an evaluation of services presented by visiting speakers? Having such a record could be useful in making future decisions on whom to repcruit. We quickly found that evaluating a service depended on having clear expectations of what the goals were for that service. We agreed to postpose further discussion of evaluation until we had clarifed the goals for worship services. In the mean time, our present system is working quite well.

PROPOSING WORSHIP SERVICES
We need a clear description of the MSUUF liturgical year. What services are standard? What are repeating seasonal events? Mark will prepare a description.

Other factors that influence decisions on whether or not to accept a service proposal include such things as:
  • Does the service fit our scheme for the year?
  • Is it formulated as a worship service?
  • Are we confident that the person will deliver a quality presentation?
  • Is there anyon in the person's presentation history hat informs our decision?

OBSERVING BIRTHDAYS
Birthday observations during a worship service (maybe once a month), could
  • Help to make children feel part of the larger church community.
  • Have a pastoral function - helping to provide recognition for those who may not have family or friends to take note of this milepost.
  • Allow using birthdays as a vehicle for teaching generosity. (It was noted that in one church, the birthday person donated a penny for each year of age.)
