Highlights of Worship Committee Meeting on April 14, 2004The full minutes are available in a Microsoft Word file ( DOC) and in an Adobe Portable Document Format file ( PDF). In both documents, the table of contents entries are hyperlinks to the corresponding topics. In addition, you may use “bookmarks” in the Acrobat reader to reach the same material. Happy reading! SUMMER SERVICESAll but two summer services have confirmed speakers. One additional speaker has been invited, but not yet confirmed. (The list of confirmed speakers and dates is in the complete minutes.) Potential speakers for the remaining summer Sunday were selected. Kate Rae will be contacting them. WORSHIP WORKSHOP We agreed that the Worship Workshop on October 2nd will be open to folk from other congregations, possibly with a registration fee to help cover costs. Discussion of a possible topic leaned toward "Worship as a Tool for Growth". Topic will be finalized at the May meeting. GLOBAL CHALICE LIGHTING We discussed participating in the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists' program for, once a month, using chalice lighting words from UU congregations around the world. Agreement could not be reached. WHAT'S IN EVERY WORSHIP SERVICE? We continued our discussion of the worship "minimum". There was support for: Joys and Sorrows, Chalice Lighting, Offering, Pulpit Notes, Opening and Closing Words, and adherence to service time limits. Optional items included: Music and Reflection Time. The Religious Education and Music programs need to be included in this discussion since it is their programs that will be impacted by setting minimums. THE NEXT BIG THING Besides our routine be-sure-there's-a-quality-service-every-Sunday activities, the Worship Committee is trying to also be working on one "big" topic. It's wrestling with these larger issues that excites some of us. "How worship can help achieve our growth goal" was suggested as a possible focus. Others included "achieving consistent quality in worship" and "how the sanctuary influences worship". The Worship Committee will be continuting this disussion at each meeting. STENCILS Kate Rae, both co-chair of the Aesthetics Committee and a member of the Worship Committee, proposed that the stencils in the corners of the sanctuary be painted over to reduce the "fussiness". We agreed. It was suggested that a comprehensive review of the aesthetics of the front of the sanctuary was needed.
