Music Committee Minutes

October 12, 2004

Present: Rex, Erica, Paul, Nancy, Michele, Jennifer

Check-in

1. Thomas Rheingans concert Sat. Nov. 13th,7:00. Piano being tuned at end of October. Circle Round to open. Rex requests costume!

Need to find out if ticketed event or donation & dessert. Decided on donation/dessert to share. Finances: 60% to Thomas, 40% to restricted music fund. Rex got fundraiser permission. General fund policy for funds raised unknown. Rex to explore with Stewardship committee. Is there a percentage of CD sales going to general fund? Jennifer to get PR done: Servetan, Bulletin, newspapers. Michele doing flyer for in-house. Erica to speak to Thomas to confirm everything. Rex will be MC. Thomas wants a vocal mic. Circle Round won’t need. Erica to sit at door. Concert set-up: chairs in the round. Room open after 3:00 for set-up. Bring food. Ask Marilyn re: coffee/tea, clean up. Rex to call Tammy re: having janitor come in later that night. Bring flowers/branches and candles for stage. No childcare at this time.

2. Featured Musicians. Nancy: She requested hymns for meditation piece to Al W. Al, Alexa,, Dave I. and Jennifer filling FM slots so far. Erica: Alice Green worship workshop—read essay by Jennifer how music can enhance worship experience. Mark G. says he would like to have FMs informed of sermon topic. Nancy to speak to him.

3. Michele read letter of appreciation from Carl Thor re. Tapestry fundraiser.

Choir needs: Need sopranos. Nora Siegfried. asks if she can have access to music restricted fund for some choir needs. Music committee agreed that the Choir Manager has access to the music restricted funds through the Music Committee.

4. Email can facilitate immediate need request. Erica asks how are choir expenses being covered on trip to Astoria? Michele to see about posting choir schedule on a bulletin board.

5. MusiComm welcomes Paul C. to committee—thanks—we’re glad you’re here!!

6. Heather L. Hanson: Musician, minister and former member to direct choir for Christmas Eve, svc. Choir singing and Jennifer playing for 2 nd svc. Singalong with Karen, and chime choir for 1 st svc.

7. Hymn selections: Nov. 7th & 21st: Mark. 14th: 21, 88, 103(?). RE pageant 12/12.

11/28: 349 We Gather Together open, 123 Spirit of Life meditation, 207 Earth was given as a Garden close. 12/26 Erica will be creating this service. Note: try 122 Sound Over All Waters as a new introduction? We should try a few new tunes that relate to topics, and repeat them several times to familiarize the congregation.

8. Music Director discussion. Rex read statement from Boise about responsibilities and experience of a part-time music director. This sounds very much like our own aspirations! We agree choir needs to grow. There should be a liaison between minister, choir director, and other music

9. Rex requests Nora to talk to Ryc about offering a short one-performance (several rehearsals) invitation for anyone who would like to sing with choir. Rex: Ryc should do every event that is budgeted, request choir manager give MusiComm list of events Ryc is doing for this year. Need to have a reason/purpose for each event. Michele: requests an International concert or coffeehouse-like event with some small group Cuban Music as a Ryc event, plus wants Balkan choir to sing and dance too.

10. Trifold brochure—Michele to update.

11. Date for spring concert—conflicts with auction date. Poss. May 14 th?

12. Job description: Personnel committee needs job Ds for accompanists, choir and non-choir Sundays.

13. Next year’s budget: Should start process soon for requests in budgeting. Maintain or add to Ryc’s events, and make a decision about compensating Karen for choir and non-choir accompanying.

14. RE liaison: Catherine Plaxton our RE contact. Important to involve children—it is hard to get together with them. Place topic in Bin for now.

15. Visioning: this whole meeting has been about our vision.

16. Agenda addendum: Jennifer has special fundraising idea for next big event that involves underwear!! Michele created very nice letter to Jean Mann in response to her request to perform here. File for reference.
