Music Committee Minutes

September 14, 2004

1. Chalice Lighting and Check-in

2. Thomas Rheingans concert Saturday November 13th

60/40 revenue split, with our 40% going to the music reserve fund

Music Committee needs to provide 20 minutes of performers and Thomas will play for the remainder of the concert.

Jennifer will write a blurb for the Servetan advertising the concert, and submit to Donna an announcement for the Sunday bulletins, and will also provide press releases to the newspapers, etc.

Michele will make fliers in late October.

3. Committee tasks

Rex would be happy to facilitate meetings, Erica will put together agendas, Kristine will type minutes, Rex will e-mail out typed minutes.

4. Featured Musicians (job description and communication)

We have Featured Musicians booked through October 22 nd.

We have a letter to hand out to special musicians discussing length and type of music that is appropriate for gathering music, meditation, musical reflection and musical inspiration.

Three possible dates to integrate music with Children’s time are Nov 14 th, January 16 th and March 20 th. We could incorporate the chimes or rhythm instruments, a call and response, a guitar (Michele would be willing to play). Perhaps we could ask Carl Thor to bring some of his instruments. We will use the chimes for November 14 th. Rex will talk with Carl to see if he could be featured musician for Jan 16 th or March 20 th.

5. Non-choir accompanist job description per Personnel Committee requirements.

Rex has the job description and is meeting with the Personnel Committee on the 20 th. Karen will be playing for first services and Nancy will play for second service until we can find someone else.

6. How to recruit new Music Comm members

What will work, what drew us to this committee? A little arm twisting(OK.. a lot), and the feeling that we can influence the music of Sunday services (and you don’t need to be a musician). We will each go through the directory and come to the next meeting with more names to suggest. Before the next meeting Michele will call Dave Irwin, Rex will call Paul Chandler, Erica will call John and or Louise Barton, and Jennifer will call Paul King to invite them to join the committee. Kristine will help provide refreshments for the October meeting.

7. Contra dance on February 26 th – anything more at this time?

We have hired a band, a caller, Carl Thor is getting the music together and will help with rehearsals.

8. RE Piano update

The piano has been fixed and only one key needs to be re-done. It is playing much better now.

9. December music coordination including Christmas Eve

Erica would like volunteers for planning music. Kristine would be willing to help out. Chime choir will play for the early Christmas Eve service. Jennifer should be able to play for the late service. The first meeting will be this Friday morning. For the 6pm service, the children might be able to sing/perform something from their pageant that would not require extra rehearsal time.

10. Sunday Book

Hymns were selected for September, October and early November.

11. Visioning

Rex feels like the fellowship is coming into a new “Spring”. His gut instinct tells him we are ready for a new growth spurt. As we grow we will need better communication skills to coordinate music in services. We also need to think about why the choir membership has not been growing.
