Music Committee Minutes

July 13th 2004

Present: Rex, Erica, Nancy (with John), Jennifer.

1. Featured Musicians
I have a list from Chris Smith that list people that have volunteered to be Featured Musicians, with dates that they would be available.
Donna Aase 7-11,8-1,8-8,8-29
Seth Moran 7-11,7-18,9-12,19,26
Jennifer Pratt-Walter 04-05
Sharon Rakoski 04-05 *(Is this for Alexa?)
Elisa Wells 7-11,718,8-8,9-12,19,26

*Nancy says we need Aug. 1st, 8th, and Sept. 5th filled for special music. Erica says a Marcie MacDonald is a new possibility on flute and clarinet. Nancy would like a variety of styles. Nancy needs choir schedule. Rex to send.

2. Thomas Rheingans
I received a call from Thom requesting to know if he could put on a concert at MSUUF. He had three dates in mind, Nov, Feb, or April.
He was thinking that it might be a benefit or as part of something we wanted to put on. He has decided to focus his attention in the Vancouver area, and the venue that he was using did not work out. He is hoping to do something with us that would give him more exposure in this area. We could use that too. He wants to have some promotional material ready for the fall and is thinking that he would use ticket sales for this event. He seems to see MSUUF as a source of people that would like his music, and that we might be there to help him widen his appeal.
He even suggested that the concert be listed for more that one day.

*Rex and Erica spoke to Thomas. He would like to use our congregant base as ticket-buyers for a concert series. Benefit or not? Same concert on multiple nights? Scheduling may be tricky. If not a benefit, he must rent space, or split door proceeds. Do need to spend 900. for RE piano. Action: decide about tickets and rent space or door donations (40/60?), how to split take, Decide if a benefit or simply a concert. Date: Nov. 13th. If wants two concerts, perhaps matinee and eve. concerts on same day, or on the 14th, or Fri. 19th/Sat. 20thin afternoon.

3. Founders Day
Chris Smith and I have selected a date for the Contra Dance and I have a list of people that I need to contact to see if I can get a Caller for the Evening. The date is Feb 26th. This comes close to the time that Thom is thinking about.
*Potluck and contradance. Rex to have helpers find a caller and set this up. Rex has music.

Rex, as promised, here are several contradance callers in the area you
may want to try:

(Note from webmaster: phone numbers and email addresses have been removed from the online minutes. Please contact a member of the Music Committee for contact information.)

Mary Devlin
Gordy Euler
Nan Evans
Merilee Karr
Hank Laramee
Erik Weberg

I'll hold Feb 26th on my calendar. Let me know if there's anything I can
do to help with planning.

Thanks,
Carl

4. The Church Accompanist.
Where as we have funding for this position, we have not formally submitted information to the Personnel committee on just what this job will entail. As a committee we need to write a job description of the job, and ensure that the Personnel Committee has a clear understanding of the duties.
*Need to sort out who accompanists will be for both services. Karen Dale (1st svc.) and Carl Thor?(2nd svc.) Erica: Karen would like non-choir job for now. Open to also being featured musician. (42 hrs. @ range of 12.25 to 16.25/hr UUA rate) This is different (lower) from Karen’s choir accomp. rate. Marc V. exploring Fair Compensation Cong. Pay: see Marc’s email. Question: should choir and non-choir accompaniment pay rates be different? Karen’s current job pay is already approved and budgeted in the choir accomp. position with occasional hymn accomp. MusiComm in agreement that choir accomp. is more difficult than hymn accomp. Rex: Describe jobs and make recommendation to Personnel Committee. ACTIONS: Research pay rates more from local churches with similar number of congregants. Interfaith group? Erica may have list from Interfaith council. Rex will send out to us for MusiComm members to make alls. Erica read pianist job description from past.

6. Repair of the RE Grand
Work has started on the Grand in RE, and we have a bill that will be coming due in July. We had talked about including the Children in RE on funding this event. I think we need ideas in this area.
*Finish in Aug. Rex spent 900.

7. Future plans for music in the RE area. With the refurbished piano, is there some thing we could do to promote music in RE? Jennifer spoke to Sue A. (YRUU) and Annette B. (CLUUB). They have deferred making decisions about fundraising until fall. Would be nice to involve youth. Action: Rex will speak to Catharine Plaxton about kids helping raise some money and awareness.

8. Jim Scott concert?
*We cannot schedule for this summer at this late date. Sunday mornings already booked up too. Defer to another season, Erica notify him.

9. *Choir report: Eight possible new members. Music selected. Surveys being tabulated. First rehearsal date 8/19 Dream svc. performance.

Respectfully submitted by Jennifer Pratt-Walter, 7/13/04
