Music Committee Minutes

May 13, 2003

Members of the committee in attendance:

Old Business

Piano in RE (Pace Piano): Piano is being played hard by the children, and
is doing its job well. The electronic piano is available to be used
where it needed. NO change recommended in the present setup of pianos in the RE building.

Appraisals: Rex talked to Bruce Lindley about appraisals for the pianos
for insurance. Both Grand pianos and the Baldwin. He is slow, but we
feel that he will eventually get the figures to us.

June Coffee House-Kaleidoscope
Discussed event organization? Erica--- Bulletin, Servetan
Jennifer: PR, Michele can do flyers. Sound and Lights Rex or Barry Cole.
Nancy and Erica for front table. Jennifer and Erica Flowers and Candles.
Set up at 2:30
Dessert setup :Jennifer

Rex to do the Fundraiser application and submit to the Board of Trustees.

Restricted accounts-- We can re-name the accounts if we wish. We will
also start two new accounts: the chimes and Piano Depreciation Funds.

Budget submitted for next year

Highest Priority
We submitted a lower budget -$1000 less because we did fewer events this
year. Increased COLA for Karen, Increased piano tuning cost.

Medium Priority: Pay for Sunday Accompanist, additional 5 events by Ryc,
Money for Guest Musician

Lowest Priority: RE Music Director, Music Director

Report on Thomas Rheingans Rehearsal performances
Two rehearsal sessions netted $50 + $69 for a total of $119. There is
one more performance in June.9th

Funds to travel to the UUMN Conference in San Antonio, TX. Aug 5-10.
There is $500 available in the MSUUF Budget. Conference theme is focused
on composing. Perhaps we can consider this again next year. The topic
may be more appropriate to our needs.

Current Tasks:

The Guitar Class. First session was well attended. More to follow.

New Business

Report on Rex's Talk with Mark Gallagher on the direction of Music at MSUUF

They discussed a role of a Music Director and the difficulties we've had
in maintaining a RE Music Program. Rex suggested altering Barbara's
contract to allow her to use her talents to bring more music to RE. Mark
suggested a choir exchange with East Rose. Mark also asked for
suggestions for performers. He has a few songs he would like to work a
sermon around.
The list of hymns in the Sunday Book will be updated by The Secretary as
we add new songs.

Reevaluate our Music Goals
The paper on the value and need for music in a Fellowship or Church
could guide us in seeing where we need to do more work. Are we doing
enough for the RE Program? Should we have a Music Committee Liaison to
the RE Committee" What type of Music program should be offered and what
is in place now?
Rex and or Michele will attend the next RE Committee meeting and try to
get a sense of the RE needs in Music.

50th Year Celebration. 15th Century Music? 50's Music, Musical Parodies
about anniversaries- will discuss more in June.

Piano -- Michele will write a short article in the Servetan about not
putting things on the piano.

Sunday Accompanists: We may want to establish a protocol to let Nancy
and Andrew knows about hymns when they are selected late.

Rex asked Mark and Kristine to have hymns in by Tuesday. Rex has asked
Mark to have Nancy and Andrew class with hymns or, if they are not in
the Sunday book, to have the Secretary call either Mark or Kristine to
get that information.

Time to Check the Web Site and evaluate any updates needed
